London, Airstrip One OCEANIA

Looks like Orwell missed it by JUST a few years - the UK is getting ready to set up wireless microphones to help make policework easier.

Of course, it's one thing to have the technology. It's quite another to want to deploy it. I find the REASON that Brits are willing to deploy it FASCINATING (and depressing). 1984 was a classic, because of Big Brother -- a corrupt government gone wild -- everyone's worst nightmare. But nothing in that article about microphones says anything about the British Government wanting to spy on citizens to catch seditious thinking; rather, people's insensitivity to others is the cause.

Is it just me, or is civilization/society slowly decaying into a vast MTV-esque morass of fun, excitement, and intolerable selfishness?

You can't whine and rail about this until you see all three of the Austin Powers movies. Maybe then you will understand what the Brits are really up against and why these drastic measures are so badly needed.

   Fred,
Only you could have been so wise to see this in it's true light (I don't know what I was thinking. I should have bounced this idea off of you before I posted <g>.)
I would take the post down, but I believe that would just be cowardly -- like me attempting to HIDE something. Instead, I need to leave this post up, so the world can see my shame, and rejoice in your wisdom.

drastic measures indeed... (oh, and only you could be so wise as to answer a question about mtv-esque morals with a reference to austin powers... (I love ya man!))
